aachi & ssipak

These are multiple screenshots from a film a friend recently gave me. It is a korean, primarily 2D animated film called 'Aachi and Ssipak'. Unfortunately, I didn't have the subtitles for it at the time but I followed along anyways, and read some synopsis of it to get a feel for the story. All I can say is it is outrageous and bizarre. The plot revolves around a society in the future which relies on feces for their energy....it just gets slightly more gross and confusing from thereon in.
Despite the crazy story, the animation is just ridiculously awesome at times, and it was super fun to watch. Alot of the designs for the characters remind me of Rugrats, yet it all has the sci-fi twist and photo realism one finds in a vast majority of asian animations encompassesed into all the other components of the film. There were also some parts that had a bit too much 3D intergration for my liking,( just to the extent that it becomes excessive and contrasts the 2D too much ) but overall it was a crazy fun movie to watch. I definetely recommend it.

Not sure how hard the film is to find, but if it is released here on DVD it is a must buy for me. I'll keep an eye out.

DEMO REEL

DemoReel designs for the DVD wrap-around. Super simple design and didn't fret too much on making it look spectacular.

PAINTINGS

Digital preliminary sketches. Im not a pro when it comes to photoshop. But I the computer can be alot more efficient, when it comes to getting a colour study sketches done. These are mostly random scenes, but one of them you can probly notice is what inspired the final piece done in guache, a couple paintings below. It was a Day and Night type scenario.

We needed to do a warm and cool scenario for this particular project. This is my 'warm' one. Colour palette included.

Jungle clearing, with rays of sunlight coming down. Done in guache.

The Night and Day scenario I mentioned earlier. Keep in mind, as I would have liked to have spent more time on painting these....I didn't, as an end result all of the above paintings I would label 'painting Sketches' rather than finished pieces. I do them too rapidly and under pressure to call them finals. I take about 2-3 hours on each. Im planning on kicking up the guache skills during the summer as well. People I talked to seem to be really divided when it comes to guache. Some people say they can't paint transparently, others say that they can't paint opaquely. I paint with it more as a watercolour, hence the sketchy rapid, flowy look to some of the pieces. I really want to work on solidifying my paintings, getting to understand guache a little bit better, because, as unforgiving as it is....its just such a damn nice medium to paint with.

TROLLS

Trolls. Sketched up for fun at the starting of the year. When I actually had time to sketch for fun....and not sketch for assignments. So far all of my postings of my work have been from the stuff I do for fun. I started off this blog thinking, all the other animation students are going to be putting up their work from school, and I don't really want to do that ( mostly because I'm not exactly proud of most of it ), I want this blog to be diverse and have lots of the stuff I do ' just for the hell of it ', the drawings and paintings I do when I'm purely being creative, and not thinking of any guidelines to follow.
BUT starting next week, I'll have received all my assignments back, and I should have time to bum my friends scanner and post both schoolwork as well as fun scribblings. Summer will probably leave the most time for me to truly be able to post at my leisure, and truly allow for this blog to blossom. As well as provide me with some free time to go out and purchase a scanner and printer, which I have so desperately needed all year.
